Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ Tops Charts Amid Disappointing Sales for ‘The Bride!’ – NBC10 Philadelphia

This past weekend, Disney and Pixar made waves at the North American box office with their new animated adventure, “Hoppers”. The film opened strong, raking in an impressive $46 million in domestic ticket sales, making it the top film of the weekend according to studio estimates released on Sunday. When combined with an additional $42 million from international markets, “Hoppers” celebrated a robust global launch of $88 million. This milestone marks the largest opening for an original animated film since the critically acclaimed “Coco” premiered in 2017.

However, not all the news is rosy within the realm of big studio offerings. Concurrently, Warner Bros. released Maggie Gyllenhaal’s reimagining of the Bride of Frankenstein story titled “The Bride!”. Unfortunately, the film debuted to a dismal $7.3 million from 3,304 domestic locations. With a production budget nearing $80 million—excluding marketing and promotional costs—this flop reflects a significant miscalculation in audience anticipation and interest.

Despite their simultaneous release, “Hoppers” and “The Bride!” catered to markedly different audience demographics; the former appeals to families with its PG rating, whereas the latter presents a darker, audacious R-rated narrative. “Hoppers” garnered a wave of positive reviews, helping it stand apart in a crowded marketplace, while the reception for “The Bride!” has seen mixed to negative critique, further compounded by lackluster audience scores.

The success of “Hoppers” is particularly crucial for Disney and Pixar, who were reeling from underwhelming performance last year with “Elio,” which suffered from the studio’s worst opening ever. With recent successes largely rooted in sequels and established franchises, “Hoppers” shines as a testament to the power of original storytelling—something both studios aim to foster. Notably, it outperformed 2023’s “Elemental,” which, while initially faltering, evolved into a sleeper hit.

With a reported production budget of approximately $150 million, “Hoppers” premiered in over 4,000 locations. Directed by Daniel Chong, the narrative revolves around a 19-year-old environmentalist who, through a unique twist, finds himself embodied in a beaver. The film features the engaging voice talents of Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, and Kathy Najimy, enhancing its appeal to younger audiences.

The positive reception of “Hoppers” is reflected in its 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 75% “definitely recommend” from PostTrak polling, coupled with an A CinemaScore. These factors suggest the film is set for a long and fruitful run in theaters, a win highly celebrated by Disney executives.

Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, praised the film, calling it a “fantastic original film” and expressing joy at families flocking to theaters to enjoy it. His statements underline the importance of audience connection and approval in a marketplace increasingly dominated by franchises and sequels.

Conversely, “The Bride!” faced its own set of challenges. The film was subject to edits post-poor test screenings, pushing its release back from September. While the production aimed to avoid clashing with Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” it has still struggled to find its footing. Interestingly, the audience for “The Bride!” leaned slightly male, with 53% identifying as such. Reviews have not been kind, manifesting in a “rotten” rating of 59% on Rotten Tomatoes and a mediocre C+ CinemaScore. Even among those who attended, only 43% expressed they would “definitely recommend” it.

Internationally, the film’s performance mirrors its domestic struggles, pulling in only $6.3 million outside of the U.S. and Canada. This disappointing total brings its global debut to a paltry $13.6 million. Warner Bros. officials recognized the setbacks, with Jeffrey Goldstein, who manages domestic distribution, noting, “Unfortunately, we came in light,” while attributing it to the inherent risks of bold storytelling in an increasingly cautious industry.

In contrast, Warner Bros. has had better news from other releases. Their recent project, “Wuthering Heights,” has crossed $213 million globally. As the studio anticipates new ownership under Paramount, it is simultaneously bracing for significant accolades at the upcoming Oscars, expecting to sway between projects like “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners.”

Meanwhile, in second place, Paramount’s “Scream 7” continued its box office run, adding $17.3 million in its second weekend, although it experienced a hefty decline of 73% in revenue. Its total domestic earnings have now reached $93.4 million, with a global tally of $149.5 million. Notably, Sony’s “GOAT” landed in fourth place with $6.6 million, while “Wuthering Heights” rounded out the top five with $3.8 million.

Analyzing these trends, Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, noted that the presence of numerous holdover films in the top 10 indicates a lack of strong competition among new arrivals. However, anticipation is building for upcoming releases, particularly Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi adventure “Project Hail Mary,” slated to hit theaters on March 20, which may invigorate the box office landscape.

Top 10 movies by domestic box office

Upon the release of final domestic figures on Monday, the top films illustrate the current box office landscape, ranked by estimated ticket sales from Friday through Sunday in U.S. and Canadian theaters, as reported by Comscore:

  1. “Hoppers,” $46 million.
  2. “Scream 7,” $17.3 million.
  3. “The Bride!” $7.3 million.
  4. “GOAT,” $6.6 million.
  5. “Wuthering Heights,” $3.8 million.

Shreya Ghoshal Pays Tribute to Lata Didi, Touches Hearts in Mumbai | Hindi Movie News

A Heartfelt Tribute: Shreya Ghoshal’s Concert “Letters To Lata Didi”

Paying homage to an icon with an 80-year career and nearly 45,000 songs is no small feat. Yet, Shreya Ghoshal embarked on this monumental journey at her concert “Letters To Lata Didi,” held at the Jio World Garden on a memorable Saturday night. Ghoshal’s concert was far from the typical large-scale spectacle; it was an intimate and emotional celebration of Lata Mangeshkar’s legacy, a night dedicated to the unparalleled influence of the “Nightingale of India.”

The Atmosphere: Pure Music, No Frills

Unlike many grand concerts that rely on visual distractions like confetti and fireworks, Ghoshal’s tribute was grounded in authenticity. With no costume changes and continuous music, she effortlessly wove through over 50 songs, each a lyrical letter to Mangeshkar’s timeless impact on Indian music. The evening was steeped in tradition and emotion, allowing the audience to connect deeply with both the music and the artists.

Opening with Reverence

The concert commenced with a traditional Ganesh vandana, setting a spiritual tone. Ghoshal candidly expressed her sentiments: “Aaj ki yeh shaam mere liye sabse khaas hai.” Her vulnerability resonated with everyone present. She emphasized that this tribute was a collective expression from her and the ensemble, cherishing Mangeshkar’s unparalleled position in music as akin to divinity. This acknowledgment of her fans’ love and reverence elevated the overall emotional atmosphere of the night.

Interweaving Memories and Music

A standout feature of the concert was how Ghoshal intertwined music with poignant memories. With audio-visual segments showcasing messages from those who knew Mangeshkar intimately—like Nitin Mukesh, Sachin Tendulkar, and Prasoon Joshi—the tribute became a shared reminiscing of a beloved figure. Ghoshal spoke of her own journey, recounting how Mangeshkar’s voice guided her passion for music from a young age.

Reflecting on her first encounter with the legend in 2005, she shared, “Uss choti si ladki ko zara bhi andaza nahi tha ke yehi woh awaaz hai jo uska haath thaamkar usse uske aane wale kal ki oor le jayegi.” Her experience encapsulated the awe many felt toward Mangeshkar, an artist whose influence reached beyond mere notes and lyrics.

Curating a Legendary Repertoire

Selecting songs from Mangeshkar’s extensive catalog posed a significant challenge for Ghoshal. “There are so many eras of her songs, her repertoire is simply massive,” she remarked. The night featured classics that spanned decades, showcasing Mangeshkar’s collaborations with a myriad of composers and singers. Ghoshal even playfully noted that they randomly picked chits of songs to determine the lineup.

One highlight included the iconic cabaret song “Aa Jaan-E-Jaan,” showcasing Mangeshkar’s versatility, underscoring the spirituality even in a genre often viewed as mere entertainment.

A Feminist Icon

In conjunction with International Women’s Day, Ghoshal emphasized Mangeshkar’s role in inspiring female musicians and asserting their place in a male-dominated industry. “Lata Didi has always inspired us. Woh sabse badi feminist hain,” she declared, reflecting on the many women from Mangeshkar’s generation who broke barriers and shaped Indian music.

Musicianship Elevated

The concert involved over 40 musicians, including the UAE Philharmonic Orchestra and a choir, recreating the orchestral grandeur reminiscent of the golden age of film music. Ghoshal felt connected to the vibes of Mangeshkar’s studio sessions, sharing, “Aaj lag raha jaise Lata Didi ke recording studio mein sab kuch live hota tha.” This dedication to live artistry elevated the concert to a level of authenticity often missing in contemporary performances.

A Night to Remember

As the concert drew to a close, Ghoshal moved the audience with poignant renditions of songs like “Lukka Chuppi” and “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon.” For the final performance, she invited the audience to turn on their phone flashlights as they collectively embraced the emotion of “Lag Jaa Gale.” Overwhelmed with gratitude and joy, Ghoshal shed tears, and the hall erupted into a well-deserved standing ovation.

A Legacy Honored

“Letters To Lata Didi” was more than just a concert; it was an evening that celebrated a monumental legacy, bridging generations through song and heartfelt memories. Shreya Ghoshal’s tribute not only honored Lata Mangeshkar’s impressive career but also connected souls through the universal language of music, solidifying the bond between artist, audience, and legend.

I’ve hit the jackpot.” With Rivals becoming a major hit, her perspective has shifted to savoring every opportunity, acknowledging the unpredictability of the entertainment industry.

A Wealth of Opportunity

Atack’s prospects have expanded significantly. Following the success of the first series, she is reportedly set to earn £1.5 million for the upcoming second season, which premieres on May 15. But that’s not all; she’s teaming up with co-star Danny Dyer for an exciting new quiz show for ITV, further solidifying her place in the industry.

Adding to her already impressive resume, insiders suggest that she is a frontrunner to host a reboot of the classic show Blind Date for Disney+, a move that would resonate well with younger audiences looking for romance. Given her candid discussions about her own tumultuous love life, Atack offers a relatable and engaging persona that could inspire contestants.

From The Inbetweeners to New Horizons

Atack initially broke through with her role as Charlotte ‘Big Jugs’ Hinchcliffe in The Inbetweeners back in 2008. Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar 2’ Set to Include FA9LA-Style Track; Celebrating His Journey as Sher-e-Baloch | Hindi Movie News

Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar 2’: A New Era of Spy Thrillers

The highly anticipated release of Dhurandhar 2 is finally upon us, and fans are buzzing with excitement. The trailer dropped recently, showcasing a blend of heart-pounding action and deep emotional drama, effectively setting the stage for what promises to be a gripping cinematic experience. At the forefront of this sequel is the charismatic Ranveer Singh, who reprises his role as Hamza Ali Mazari, also known as Jaskirat Singh Rangi.

A Sequel that Promises High Stakes

Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar 2 is not just a continuation; it reinvents the narrative that fans loved about the original film. The sequel dives into the complexities of Hamza’s character arc and his journey towards becoming Sher-e-Baloch. As key story elements unfold, the film aims to keep audiences at the edge of their seats, delivering both intense drama and unresolved conflicts.

Celebrating Transformation with a Special Song

One of the major talking points emerging from the trailer is the inclusion of a special song that echoes the popularity of FA9LA, the iconic track from the first film. According to reports, this new song is set to celebrate Hamza’s transformation and the pivotal moment when he earns the title of Sher-e-Baloch.

With glimpses offered in the trailer, it’s clear that this song will serve as a significant emotional high point in the storyline. It promises to capture not just the essence of Hamza’s journey but also the spirit of celebration that accompanied it, much like FA9LA did for its characters.

On Location: The Magic of Ladakh

Interestingly, the new song has been filmed at the same stunning Ladakh set where the original FA9LA sequence was shot. This strategic choice not only maintains continuity but capitalizes on the breathtaking landscapes that Ladakh offers. Aditya Dhar opted to shoot the two songs back-to-back, given the geographical challenges and unpredictable weather, ensuring a seamless filming process without the need for an additional visit.

A Different Dance Style: Hamza’s Persona

While FA9LA featured Akshaye Khanna dancing flamboyantly, Hamza’s representation in Dhurandhar 2 offers a contrast. Reports suggest that rather than performing any dance moves, Hamza will be portrayed as intense and mission-driven. The background dancers will take center stage, while Ranveer Singh remains committed to his serious character, emphasizing the transformation he is undergoing.

This choice marks a significant character distinction; Rehman Dakait, as portrayed by Khanna, was bold and operatic. Hamza, with his layered personality, adds depth to the narrative, steering clear from tropes typically found in action-spy genres.

Viral Moments: A Comparison of Dance Styles

One fascinating tidbit stemming from the FA9LA song was Akshaye Khanna’s improvised dance moves that went viral after the film’s release. Initially, Khanna wasn’t expected to showcase such exuberance, but director Aditya Dhar wisely decided to include those spontaneous moments, instantly making FA9LA a memorable piece.

With a keen understanding of character dynamics, Dhar transports audiences by establishing a strong differentiation in style and substance when it comes to the new track in Dhurandhar 2.

A Star-Studded Cast

In addition to Ranveer Singh’s compelling portrayal as Hamza, Dhurandhar 2 boasts an impressive ensemble cast. With veterans like Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and rising star Sara Arjun joining the fray, the film promises to deliver not only action and intrigue but also strong performances from a diverse range of actors.

As the release date of March 19 approaches, anticipation builds for a film that aims to redefine the spy thriller genre while cherishing its roots. Fans are undoubtedly eager to witness how Hamza’s journey unfolds and what surprises lie ahead.
