Ocean City Police Department Embraces Technology for Modern Policing

OCEAN CITY, Md. — In a significant move toward enhanced public safety and officer efficiency, Ocean City officials have greenlit a comprehensive technology upgrade for the Ocean City Police Department. Central to this initiative is the incorporation of artificial intelligence, aimed at streamlining operations and improving community engagement.

Addressing Current Technology Gaps

Police Chief Raymond Austin has voiced concerns regarding the department’s aging technology, particularly the in-car camera systems. At one point, the force had 19 operational vehicle cameras, but that number has dwindled to just nine, with remaining units frequently malfunctioning. The upgrade includes the installation of 25 new in-car cameras, equipped with automatic license plate recognition technology, set to bolster the department’s capabilities on the road.

Revolutionary AI Integration

One of the standout features of this upgrade is the introduction of Axon AI, a system that has already delivered promising results during a three-month trial involving 12 officers. The integration of AI has reportedly reduced report writing time by 58%, allowing officers to allocate more hours toward community patrols and immediate response duties. Notably, the AI system includes a live language translation feature supporting 57 languages, thus improving communication with non-English speaking residents and visitors.

Frank Howard, a homeowner in Ocean City, noted, “I think any kind of technology that helps our police officers is a plus. We feel it’s pretty safe, but it can always be better.” This sentiment reflects the community’s desire for enhanced public safety measures while fostering a positive relationship with law enforcement.

Enhancing Officer Equipment

In addition to the AI systems, the department is set to introduce Taser 10 devices, replacing older models. These new Tasers offer an impressive range of 45 feet—significantly expanding the current 25-foot range. The advanced probes of the new devices are designed to penetrate thicker winter clothing while using less voltage, ensuring a safer approach to apprehension in colder months.

Comprehensive Surveillance and Support Systems

The overhaul also extends to body-worn cameras, providing officers with an effective tool for accountability and transparency. A new drone detection system will identify unauthorized drone operators, a consideration important in our technologically advanced landscape.

Moreover, the establishment of a real-time crime center named Fusus will allow officers to access live video feeds and streams from various sources, significantly enhancing their situational awareness during ongoing investigations.
